Overview

Many of us find ourselves surrounded by a few (or more than a few) students who shrug when asked about their writing. They slump in their chairs, groan or ask “How long does this have to be?”

What can we do to address the reluctant writers in our classrooms?

In this three-part series, we’ll learn a number of practical, ready-to-use strategies to get all kids writing with enthusiasm and energy.

Learning Objectives

SESSION 1: Why?

  • Reflect on our own lives as writers and the writing experiences that have shaped the way we teach writing.
  • Explore how creating a safe and daily space for writing improves student output.
  • Learn how the nervous system impacts how students engage with writing.

SESSION 2: How 1.0

  • Learn specific ways to offer choice in the writing classroom while staying true to state or national writing standards.
  • Discover how to connect student writers to an authentic audience.
  • Explore practical ways to invite students to write for a specific purpose.

SESSION 3: How 2.0

  • Learn to infuse cues of safety and connection during writing lessons and when conferring with students.
  • Watch a video example to see what this looks like with students.
  • Explore how to use real-world examples, along with modeling your own thinking and writing, to help students improve their writing.
