"Humans of New York" Shares Incredible Education Stories

Just one voice can make a difference. Over the last week, the power of one young man's voice has changed his school in the most remarkable way. Our hearts have been captured by the education stories coming from the Facebook page (and blog) Humans of New York. HONY, as fans call it, has devoted the last week focusing its nearly 12 million fans on a middle school in New York City.

As Humans of New York writes, "Mott Hall Bridges Academy is a middle school located in Brownsville, Brooklyn—the neighborhood with the highest crime rate in New York City. It's not the best place to be a kid." The stories on HONY's Facebook page chronicle some of the student's daily struggles and how the educators guide them to become scholars.

From the school's site: "Mott Hall Bridges Academy opened its doors to 45 sixth graders and four teachers. It was in these hallways and classrooms that students were transformed into scholars. Now the school has nearly 200 scholars attending from grades 6–8."

Based on the popularity of these stories, the blog asked fans to help the Brownsville students visit someplace new. In one week, the blog has raised over $700,000 for the school to take field trips for the next ten years and even name a scholarship after the young man who made it all possible. In today's Heinemann blog, we look at the timeline of the stories these educators are sharing with the world.

It started with one young man crediting his principal as his inspiration:

A few days later, HONY brought his audience inside that young man's school to meet the inspirational educator and that's when the story really starts to go viral:
