It is with much reflection and consideration that I have made a decision to leave Heinemann. This comes at a time when the success of our business gives us many reasons to celebrate, but the time is right for me to make this decision.
Collectively, we can celebrate so many accomplishments as an organization. Each author, employee and department has contributed to the profound success we have experienced while serving as stewards of the mission to remain dedicated to teachers. The last 14 years have been the most professionally rewarding years of my career, and your collegial partnership has deeply influenced my thinking and approach about leadership and management.
As we move forward, Vicki Boyd will serve as Acting President of Heinemann. I am as confident in Heinemann’s future as I am proud of its past. Reflecting on some of our accomplishments:
- Quality content in the face of increasing competition
The professional book market has become highly competitive, but even as additional publishers have entered the market, Heinemann has sharpened its focus to continue to deliver high quality content from authors while maintaining a consistent level of performance. There are so many authors to name who have contributed to our success that it is impossible to list them all. My professional and personal life has been enriched by knowing and working with you.
- Launching classroom resources
Heinemann's collective launch of firsthand allowed us to support authors who were committed to providing classroom resources that also aim to improve teacher expertise. Thank you for your willingness to experiment with this type of classroom publishing. As a result, thousands of teachers have become familiar with progressive instructional practices and have enriched student lives.
- Delivering content digitally
Our success has given us the opportunity to explore and develop digital ways of delivering content from ebooks to converting applicable content to apps. Our success also permitted us to invest in the thoughtful consideration and development of the Digital Campus platform. While we may be a little ahead of time, the platform allows us to be ready for those digital natives who seek professional development.
I am so proud to have been at the helm of Heinemann during such a period of extraordinary product innovation and financial growth. And it has been a privilege to work with each and every one of you as partners and colleagues.
