Throughout April and May, Heinemann surveyed over 1,300 educators including classroom teachers, interventionists, literacy coaches, and reading specialists. From these surveys, we learned more about the obstacles educators faced during the early stages of the COVID19 pandemic.

Shared teacher learning in the digital age must be authentic, participatory, generative, and relevant to our teaching lives. Technology and digital tools can strengthen and expand a strong learning community to empower teacher learning.

Before we were teachers, we were readers−readers who understand the power reading has to change our lives from the new characters we meet, the new places we visit, and the new lessons we learn.

Regardless of where you prefer to work, the space you create for your work as literacy coach is personalized to the work you do and the things you need to do it with.

What’s the role of technology in literacy coaching? It’s a question that gets mixed responses from teachers and coaches. If you ask Stephanie Affinito, author of Literacy Coaching: Transforming Teaching and Learning with Digital Tools and Technology, she would say “it depends.”

Although seemingly a straightforward position, coaching is anything but linear.
