Why Student Leaders Add to Inquiry-Based Math

Elevating learning for math students, assigning student leaders in the classroom lets students learn how to become effective leaders by helping classmates with language or solution methods, or leading practice routines. 

Student Leaders are a crucial component of an effective mathematics classroom, according to research. Findings show it impacts math learning and teaching by helping students develop deep understanding while they practice, apply, and discuss what they know with skill and confidence. 

Empowering Students

Student Leaders play many roles in other crucial classroom components. They lead many of the vital routines that start each math class and help other students see how to solve problems. They also manage and distribute learning materials.  
 
During whole class or small group activities, Student Leaders help others engage in mathematical thinking in a variety of ways. Coaching, modeling, clarifying, explaining, questioning, and offering feedback are just some of the ways these leaders collaborate with their classmates. 
 
A vital role of the classroom teacher and staff is to support and mentor students as they develop their skills as Student Leaders throughout the year.  

Five Core Structures 
Student Leaders is one of five research-based components that are the organizational touchstones of the Math Expressions program. These Five Core Structures also include Building Concepts, Math Talk, Quick Practice, and Helping Community. 

These structures are not static. They are interactive. They work together and support one another. The research project that spearheaded its development found that using the Five Core Structures in the classroom enables children from all backgrounds to learn mathematics with understanding, fluency, and confidence. 
 
With over ten years of development and funding from the National Science Foundation, Math Expressions is a research-based Kindergarten–Grade 6 elementary mathematics program. Its inquiry-based approach drives active instruction, student engagement, and proven results.
