Gene Luen Yang Awarded 2016 MacArthur Fellowship

Heinemann Publishing congratulates author and illustrator Gene Luen Yang on receiving a 2016 MacArthur Fellowship. As a teacher, he always taught by drawing saying that his lessons would work in a comic book format.

As a member of the National Ambassador Program for Young People’s Literature, he worked on the platform of “reading without walls.” He is also overseeing the New Superman from DC Comics.

The Mac Arthur Foundation wrote: "Gene Luen Yang is a graphic novelist and cartoonist whose work for young adults demonstrates the potential of comics to broaden our understanding of diverse cultures and people. Yang has produced full-length graphic novels, short stories, and serial comics, many of which explore present-day and historical events through a contemporary Chinese American lens."

In 2014, Gene Yang shared with Heinemann’s Digital Library an “essay in panels” on Graphic Novels in the Classroom.
